August 2025 Sales Performance
August marked the 58th month since the launch of the PlayStation 5, and for the first time in several months, the PS4 gained ground, outselling the PS5 by 22,653 units when comparing aligned launch timelines.
Over the past year, the PS4 has outpaced the PS5 by roughly 210,000 units, reflecting a slowdown in next-gen console sales amid increased market saturation and ongoing hardware refresh anticipation.
Long-Term Sales Trends
Despite the recent slowdown, the PS5 maintains a solid overall lead. With 26.6 million units sold in 58 months, Sony’s current-generation console remains ahead of the PS4’s 25.27 million at the same stage.
For comparison:
- The PS4 crossed 27 million units by its 61st month (November 2018).
- It hit 30 million by month 71 and went on to sell 34.93 million lifetime units in the US.
That means the PS5 still trails the PS4’s lifetime total by about 8.3 million units, but it’s on pace to surpass that milestone within the next two years if trends continue.
